Asiatown Bingo Crawl 2023

Image
The Asiatown Bingo Crawl was based on 3 featured restaurants on the Bingo Game piece asiatowntourhtx.com/bingo. This crawl event was a way to promote the bingo game created by Houston Asiatown Tours. The event was held on Sunday, December 17, 2023. [ Event Page ] Asiatown Tours' Bingo Card 3rd Quarter 2023 The goal was to generate exposures for Asiatown Tours and create engagement with the foodies at the restaurants. I think it was due to the date was so close to end of year and people having overbooked holiday gatherings, my event had a low turn out. I didn't mind because it is usual for the month of December.  Walking around to see where we could go at next crawl I originally chose Mala Sichuan because it is on the bingo card and with an easy vertical line with The Bunny Tea and Linda's Tropical Fruits. Due to low attendance, we changed to Yin Tang instead. It was just next door at Metropole Center. There was the same spicy Sichuan flavored malatang as if we were at Mala ...

Houston Diwali Foodie Adventure 2023

Image
Thanks to my Yelp friend Sara I. helping me to host the Foodie Adventure on Sunday, November 12, 2023. It happened to be on Diwali. So, we chose to be in the Diwali theme. [ Event Page ] We dined at Kathmandu Curry during Diwali UYE I have been rebranding Chinatown Crawl Meetup events to Foodie Adventures because the events are outside of Houston Chinatown. There is no exception to this one. But the meetup style remained in progressive dinner as Chinatown Crawl, we dine, shop and dessert in 3 hours.  Customized Name Tags for Diwali UYE  We featured Kathmandu Curry as our dining restaurant. The timing was right on point. There were not many people during lunch on that Diwali Sunday. We believe the customers were still at the temples. Service was just okay. We ordered a few dishes to share. Sara introduced Nepalese Momo and Pani Puri as their signature dishes. Momo was a Nepali style dumpling served with tomato chutney. Pani Puri was a round, hollow puri, crisp and filled ...

Teo Chew Cuisine at Jiu Fu

Image
The new owner of 明记 took over Jiu Fu Café early 2022. They changed the entire menu to Chao Zhou aka Teo Chew or 潮州 cuisine. Prior to 2021, the restaurant had noodles. But the only noodles you can find is on the standard menu, no more gluten-free noodles or handmade noodles. Teo Chew Cuisine 潮州菜 is milder than most Chinese regional cuisines. According to Wikipedia, "Chaozhou 潮州, alternatively Chiuchow, Chaochow or Teochew, is a city in 广东省 the eastern Guangdong province of China. It borders Shantou 汕头市 to the south, Jieyang 揭阳市 to the southwest, Meizhou 梅州市 to the northwest, the province of Fujian 福建省 to the east, and the South China Sea to the southeast." Looking at the photos on the wall. These dishes are unique to Chao Zhou region: 粥 Rice Porridge or Congee is overcooked rice in water with other proteins and topped with preserved vegetables or seasoned meat. Most of Congees are served in big portions. Single portions are limited to D03 Oyster, Clams, Ground Pork 干贝咸骨粥 , D05...

Kuen Noodle House Menu Explained

Image
Not all Lanzhou Pulled Noodles are created equal. At Kuen Noodle House, it is based on Xi Ma Xiang branded ingredients. You must try X.M.X. Beef Noodles to experience the authentic flavors. In this blog, I am gonna simplify the menu for ease of ordering. The following items with prices are based on the menu of July 2022. All noodle dishes can be made with regular thickness , thin pulled noodles , thick noodles or shaved noodles . There is no gluten-free nor vegan entrées, but you have to ask waiter which dish can be vegan and most of vegan options are in appetizers. You can also ask waiter to substitute chicken for beef (not recommended on soupy ones).  You get to choose from soupy noodles, saucy noodles (Xinjiang Style) or dry noodle (Stir Fried).  Soupy Noodles: X.M.X. MDK Noodles Menu Explained

Image
Here is an overview of MDK Noodles' menu in Houston Chinatown. Storefront at night MDK can be interpreted in different ways for Myung Dong Kyoja 명동교자 or Myung Dong Kalguksu. When I translate the Korean script, I got noodles and dumplings. But I have heard that Myung Dong is the fashion district in Seoul, South Korea.  Anyways, MDK Noodles is a family owned business from Koreatown in Los Angeles. It specializes in knife-cut noodles, pork dumplings, and chewy spicy cold noodles. I am grateful to have simple Korean noodle house in Houston Chinatown. Here are few popular items: Kalguksu = knife-cut noodle in a very hearty chicken broth soup (non-pork, but dumpling may contain pork) Bibimguksu = spicy mixed cold noodle soup served with chicken broth Bulgogi pancake = Korean-style meat pan fried cake (takeout is served in a pizza box) Cold soybean noodle soup (콩국수) = house made chlorella noodles in the smooth soybean soup topped with sliced tomato and cucumber. Improv Chinatown Crawl SJC

Image
This was my first time to host a Chinatown Crawl event within 24 hours and away from home. It only took me 20 minutes to plan an improv event and post it on Facebook . During my vacation to San Jose Bay Area last August, family members got interested with my food crawl style meetup in Houston. But there is no way for them to experience it. So, I decided to host a Chinatown Crawl in San Jose to give them a firsthand experience. It also gave me an opportunity to test this concept. After the successful Asian Heritage Celebration @ North Golden Sun Plaza  being outside of Chinatown, I knew this would be a breeze. First, I asked my nieces and family friends where they would like to eat. I told them about my fond memories from a longest running crawl event - Year of the Dog UYE @ 75+85 ChinatownCrawl . My focus would be about BBQ and Hotpot in San Jose. Originally, we planned to crawl Silver Creek Market Place on Story Road. We can dine at Q Pot Korean BBQ & Hot Pot  ...

Removed Yelp Review in Respect of Event Host

Image
This review was originally posted at  UYE: Korean BBQ & Sashimi . I've decided to take it down because I felt my experience should have no rating. It's not fair to impact the event host's hard work organizing such gathering in short notice. I deleted this review voluntarily What? No one mentioned me? Yeah. I was there visiting not eating. Since it was close to my office, I decided to stop by to say hello. This must be a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Come on Il Me Jung, put a sign out there. I parked across street hoping not to get towed. At least the street wasn't busy.  I couldn't believe so many people could fit in a room like a wash closet. I couldn't stay to join because I'm agoraphobic, not particularly favor of big crowd in small space. I also don't like communal style eating. Sorry.  If you are interested to watch the full video, here you go https://www.instagram.com/p/BihVGNnHDM7/ . See all photos from Lou C. for UYE: Korean ...

Hot Pot Sauce Recipes

Image
Let's make some sauces for the hot pot dinner. Sauce is essential to the meal. What would you want it to taste? Spicy, Savory. Sweet. Mild. You name it. I collected these simple recipes from few websites in China and translated to English especially made for the Chinatown Crawl UYE at 75 BBQ & Hot Pot Buffet . These are just for looks. 2 out of 5 sauces are below my expectations. Look at the sauce bar first. These are on the line for you to choose from. But you must know how they taste first. Here are the hints. Left side of sauce bar Shrimp flavored chips - not sauce, just snacks Soy bean paste - deep fermented beans base Oyster sauce - sweet savory Seafood sauce - sweet savory Soy sauce - salty liquid Chili pepper - spicy condiment Crushed peanuts - nutty condiment Cilantro - savory condiment Cumin - savory condiment Chopped green onions - savory condiment Sesame - savory condiment Fermented bean curd - light salty base Right side of sauce bar ...
