MDK Noodles Menu Explained

Here is an overview of MDK Noodles' menu in Houston Chinatown.

MDK can be interpreted in different ways for Myung Dong Kyoja 명동교자 or Myung Dong Kalguksu. When I translate the Korean script, I got noodles and dumplings. But I have heard that Myung Dong is the fashion district in Seoul, South Korea. 

Anyways, MDK Noodles is a family owned business from Koreatown in Los Angeles. It specializes in knife-cut noodles, pork dumplings, and chewy spicy cold noodles. I am grateful to have simple Korean noodle house in Houston Chinatown.


Here are few popular items:
Kalguksu = knife-cut noodle in a very hearty chicken broth soup (non-pork, but dumpling may contain pork)
Bibimguksu = spicy mixed cold noodle soup served with chicken broth
Bulgogi pancake = Korean-style meat pan fried cake (takeout is served in a pizza box)
Cold soybean noodle soup (콩국수) = house made chlorella noodles in the smooth soybean soup topped with sliced tomato and cucumber.
Chlorella Noodles = chewy, spicy, sweet and savory noodles made with Chlorella (green algae).
Mixed Spicy Chlorella Noodles = Bibimguksu (비빔국수)  = cold noodle dishes with chlorella noodles. 
Dongchimi (동침아국수) = mild pickle if you can't take the heat from kimchi.


Dietary Preferences:
Vegetarian - all cold noodles. Because the soup bases are either made with mild kimchi brine or fish stock (non-pork). Look for green leaf symbol on the menu. (11-17, 22, 26)
Gluten-Free - you can choose rice dishes like Bibimbap (22-23) or arrowroot noodles (12, 16) and Stir fried squid with glass noodles (24).
Mushroom - tell your waiter to skip shitake in Bibimbap and black fungus or other dishes may contain mushrooms.
Shell Fish - avoid seafood pancake, skate, spicy rice cake and noodles with fish stock. Please ask waiter for ingredients. (3, 20,-21)
Pork - skip all dumplings and the items with pork on the menu (6-10, 19)

North Golden Sun Plaza

Here is a newfound strip mall that resembles a strip mall in Chinatown. It's called North Golden Sun Plaza ( Google  |  Yelp ) in North Houston. The zip code should be 77014, but many still using 77068 because it's separated by a street. The street address is 3645 Cypress Creek Parkway, aka FM 1960 W, between TC Jester and Walter Road. According to an article on  Chron.com , North Golden Sun Plaza was established when Sun's Club moved in 2015 after Wal-mart moved across street (zip code 77068). Then, the lot owner expanded from one building to this horseshoe-shaped 3 buildings. Thanks to the Facebook folks who live around this area for the history and the proper street name of Cypress Creek Parkway. FM 1960 was renamed within last few years ( article on ABC13.com ). Therefore, you'll see some newer businesses are using Cypress Creek Parkway on their business cards. Either way is correct.
