HAAPI Films Gave me Good Vibes

Image
Past weekend was the final week of HAAPI Film Festival. It was my pleasure to attend the screening of MELE MURALS and meeting the film director Tadashi Nakamura. I'm a big fan of his work. I watched his earlier film Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings on Xfinity on Demand in April, when it was available from CAAMFest sponsorship . So glad to pose with my favorite Asian film director, Tad Nakamura I couldn't believe he is a fourth generation Japanese American lives in LA and never lived in Hawaii. But he was able to bring the best of his ability to help the audience to experience the actors' reality. Both movies are based on true stories with a documentary format. However, it requires more knowledge about Hawaii when you watch Mele Murals. I asked someone after the movie as if she knew certain cultural references. But without those Hawaiian terms, the movie will not make sense. Tad was at CAAMfest in SF. So...Same feeling with Kumu Hina from last year's sc...

Yelp Cash Back

Image
I was adding a biz to earn airline miles on my bookmark and found an eye-catching ad on the side. Find more stories of  #YelpCashBack on Twitter. Can search #YelpCashBack on iPhone Wow. Yelp Cash Back for real? According to Yelp Blog "Earn Rewards and Save at Local Businesses With Yelp Cash Back" , "you can earn money for frequenting the spots you love" and earn up to 10% back. Within minutes, Yelp texted me 7% back. Sign up is very easy. You need a credit card. And, you can link multiple credit cards. The service is provided by Empyr . The reward program works like earning airline miles. The system recognizes your credit card purchase. Whenever I eat at JB Asian Cafe , I receive a message to tell me how much I earned. While Yelp app has not developed a search function for "Cash Back", I saved some links for you and me to use while on the go: Houston Cash Back Sugar Land Cash Back Dallas Cash Back San Antonio Cash Back Austin Cash Bac...

Take a Yelfie

Image
How cool is that? Take a Yelfie to proof you were there. Read this blog on Yelp . Well, it's kind of annoying at first. But, okay. I admit. It's fun once I get used to it. Taking this Yelfie bumped my data usage. I noticed this on a recent Android release 9.0.1 in December. But  someone  in Canada received this feature in November. Huh. Nu Ice has free WiFi. Don't expect my Yelfie at all check-ins. The only time I can share Yelfie is when I find free WiFi to use. Sorry.

HoustonRodeo Value Wednesday

Image
Know where you parked is important After my HoustonRodeo visit last year, I wanted to try  HoustonRodeo on a Budget , I decided to go even cheaper - Value Wednesday. The admissions are at half price for both ground and rodeo/concert every Wednesday. Kids carnival and wine garden were not affected by this change. I have never thought there was so many people around NRG Stadium on a Wednesday afternoon. I blame it on Spring Break. I had no problem finding parking at a nearby lot. However, I paid $15 at Medical center. It's very close by and only available after 5 pm. Afterwards, I learned there were other cheaper lots a little further out. From the moment I entered the lot, parked my car, walked to shuttle stop and to the bus taken off, it took around 45 minutes. During the afternoon commute hours, travel time was about 20 minutes on a 5 minute route. All of these are compensated from daylight savings time - I've got one extra hour of sunlight. I had to buy admission t...

HoustonRodeo on a Budget

Image
Based on my memory from a talk thread  last year, Mrs F (profile was deleted) sent me some tips on going to Houston Rodeo on a budget - park off site and take METROrail to Reliant. Instead of $20 onsite parking, this would only cost below $10 including a round-trip rail fare. Google Map app says 25 min to go. Last Friday, I went with my Yelper friend Samantha to watch John Legend concert at NRG Stadium. I parked at my favorite downtown spot -  SAKS GARAGE . I arrived around 5. According to the parking attendant, the cost to park after 3 pm on weekdays is $5. That price included weekends, as long as you leave by 1:30 or 2 am. The weather was pretty good - a little chilly with a cloudless sky. I walked a few blocks to Main Street Square station, bought my one-way ticket $1.25 prior to boarding. The friendly fare inspector directed me to the right train - South Bound. So, Reliant would be the last stop.  The METROrail passed many beautiful and inte...

Budget Planning

Image
I was approached by a few acquaintances who were not familiar with Yelp. They often ask, "you had so many check-ins. How much do you spend to eat out?" Yelp is not just a review site for restaurants, it is a resource for different types of businesses in our community. Really, I don't eat out much. However, I like to cook my own food. So, I'm always shopping for good values.  I'm out there searching for outrageously low prices. As I said in my check-in chat: Don't go broke when you think you have to eat out to be active. Don't think eating out often is the ticket to be an effective Yelper. If you can't control your spending, try to log your spending and tally up at the end of day.
